Oil from coil bolts

Postby aray347 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 11:37 am

Running a 3 1/2 rhino and I am getting oil from around the coil bolts. I am having to put silicone on the bolts and on the set screws that are in the holes Im not using. Motor is pretty fresh with about 40 passes. Just wondering if this is common.

That's a new one for me, wonder if Wild Bill has seen this b4? I've only seen leaks through cyl head bolts....

No I haven't. Although I have never used those motors personally.

Also, I have never heard of this with any brand of motor.

On a Rhino one of the coil bolt holes goes into the valve area. If you want you can take the valve cover off and put silicone in the corner where the bolt hole comes in. Not a big deal.

How much oil do you put in at change? Is it possible you are either using too much oil or it is getting terribly diluted?

10 oz is what I have always ran. This started after a rebuild but I have not found any reason for it. Motor runs good I just cant stand oil leaks. It will do it at start up with fresh oil.

Maybe when they rebuilt the engine the found the coil bolt holes were not in good shape and repaired the bolt holes. They do this by machining the block and bolting a plate on with new holes. I'm thinking one of the bolts that hold this plate on went into oil. Oil is getting behind the plate and coming out all holes. If you take this off and look you should find where the oil is coming from. Clean and silicone and put it back together and it should be good.

If the motor has a removable coil bracket, Remove it and inspect the holes under the bracket. Locate the ones that could possibly be leaking, place a set screw in or silicone them really good, I would recommend the set screw with silicone. Then place the coil bracket back on. Be careful not to run a bolt or set screw into the sleeve.
