hi there, brand new to the jr. dragster scene. bought one for my 11yr old son last week.. and all though we've been talkin about it for a couple years, this car was an impulse buy duh ... the people didnt know much about it, nor did they race it. so i dont know what the chasis is, or even what the motor is.. yeah i'm a bone head i know.
was thinkin if i put up some photos someone might be able to pass some intelligence my way??? thanks...

i popped the cyl head off, near as i can tell it's roughly a 2.49x2.49 bore/stroke, and the cam lift @ the valve is around .345

to the pool.

Looks to me like you have a bone stock raptor with one of the round slide carbs from Mikini... I think it was a 30mm, but I am not sure. Salibury clutch. If you measure the thickness of the belt one of the guys that knows can tell you if it is a 330 or a 340.

A pick or 2 with the body on may prove me wrong, but a guess on the chassis is a mid 90 home built buy someone who knew what they were doing or a local chassis shop that built a few. It doesn't look like one of the mass produced chassis. If you will take a measurement at the end of the nose and tell us the thickness of the walls of the tubing we can tell if it is Chromemoly or Mild Steel. I see it has the old go cart steering, which means it is limited to 8.90.

I will guess it is mild steel since it has the go cart steering and it looks like a 90's model. with that and a bone stock raptor a guess would be upper 10's to lower 11's for how fast.

I think it looks like a good car, and you and your driver will have a blast!!! When it comes time to go faster I would save my nickels and buy another car since you will be limited to 8.90. You will find that it is very easy to drop a ton into these cars to go 2 seconds faster.

As of right now. The 2 things i see that you need to compete is helmet bars (if you are going to compete in NHRA). The other is a Manual Kill Switch. Here is a link to a very good one...http://secure.dnihost.net/mtcatalog/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=MC&Product_Code=401549&Category_Code=EP

Have fun (you will) and ask away!

Welcome to the site "bone head". You will feel right at home with the rest of us "bone heads". You would be suprised just how many folks that start jr dragster racing start out with an impulse buy just like you. You have already done one of the beat things you could do. That is to come here and start asking questions. PLEASE, never feel that you can not ask a question. I promise you, most everyone here has been right where you are today. JrDad is right on with his assesment. What you have appears to be a Raptor, Briggs and Stratton engine with stock stroke (2.438) and stock bore (2.562) Even though i have been told i am .001 off. Probably around 6.5:1 compression. I agree also that you probably have a 30mm round slide Mikuni. The clutch i am guessing is a 330. I say this because most of the 330 clutches were not painted. They were more of a anodized or bare metal color. I would also agree with the ET prediction somewhat. Low 11 ET maybe mid 11 seconds. Depending on the cam. I will look and see what i can find on that lift. There are a few things that you can do do get a better ET over what it is going to run now. Longer strock crank, port out the intake runner. Judging from the size of the intake, the runner has not had much if anything done to it. Before we go overboard and start telling you what all you can do. Let us know what your initial expectations are. My guess is, you just want to go out with your son. Learn as much as you can and have fun until the both of you get the hang of it. If that is the case i would simply go over the car (whick it looks like you are doing now) to make sure everything is tight, nothing cracked or boken and everything works the way it should. First thing i would do before i would put him in it and him hit the throttle is, put the emergency kill swith in that was recommended. When do you guys think you will make it to the track?
And what ever you do, teach him KILL SWITCH, KILL SWITCH, KILL SWITCH.

I was unable to find a cam with that degree of lift. When you get around to pulling the side cover off you can look at the cam gear. That is where most cam manufacturers etch what type and size cam it is.

right now im more interested in reliability than performance.. but little tricks are definitely appreciated, as i have zero flat head experiance.
we raced go karts last year, but they had the ohv 6.5 base motors in them.
and tuning with alcohol, and mikuni's are new to me also, so i hope the tune on the car is fairly close for me to start with. i'm in seattle so the air will be good here atleast.

Just ask any question that comes to mind.

My Dad use to own a towing company in Seattle. Was called Bud's towing service. I was born on the other side of Stevens pass. Moses Lake Wa. I still have brothers and sisters out there. They are in the Marysville area just outside Seattle.

Wht ever you do, bring camera or camcorder to the track that first day. Those are memories you will want to have forever.

When you see the smile on his face you'll understand why all us bone heads put ourselves through it lol
