Polar clutch belt

Postby revkev57 » Fri Oct 05, 2018 3:43 am

Can someone tell me how i determine which is the correct size belt to use on my polar clutch, i purchased the clutch second hand & am not sure how to know which size belt i need as there seems to be about 4 different size belts - .780, .850, 7/8" & 3/4". Any help would be appreciated

If someone you race with has an old one you could borrow just put it on and measure clearance on the primary clutch. That would be the easiest way.

People run them different but it needs to be more than the distance of the roller to the first angle of the ramp. It all works together.

you can buy belts from .770 (just under 3/4 =.750 ) all the way up to .860 ….. order up a .780 belt and install it then measure belt clearance to see where your at , myself I always kept belt clearance between .035 to .045 ….. if your out of your own preferred belt clearance range then order a slightly wider or thinner belt , and maybe order a couple extra belts in your favorite width to keep belt clearance in check

Check the gap between belt and primary sheaves with a feeler gauge, .035-.045 is what I always wanted also. It is also easier to check with primary clutch off motor.
Hope this helps you.

Are you talking about the gap at the very bottom ? Because there wouldn't be a gap on the side of the belt where it runs on the sheaths would there ?

There should be a gap on the side, this allows the car to idle without moving.

Ok so should there be clearance on both sides if so is it .035 - .045 each side ?? Or should it be roughly .020 each side having a total of .040 ??

Motor will rev higher and may bog when it grabs the belt. Will also be a little slower reaction times.

Apart from the bog & the reaction times would i expect the car to go any quicker ? I have rectified the issue

It depends. My car will 60ft quicker with a little wider belt gap.

But this is double what it should be, so you would think it should make a difference
