Drive Gear Mounting Question.

Postby bdrmotorsports » Thu Jan 10, 2019 12:11 pm

Dumb question of the day guys but on my drive gear i have 2 allen head set screws to tighten up the gear on the jackshaft. Obviously i am tightening the one that locks down on the key but my question is the other one that locks down on the jackshaft itself. Would you tighten that one up also directly on the jackshaft or leave it loose? Also should there be any "play" on the secondary side when i lock down the locking collar? leave a bit of room for the clutch to float? Thanks, im sure i'll have some more questions as continue on this maintenance stuff :)

If you lock down the gear Allen screws use lock tight, really common of falling out. I personally leave BOTH screws out. I set spacers correctly and correct length key and you don't need the set screws. When you tighten them down they seem to bugger up the jack shaft and make pulling g back apart tough.

As for secondary, I leave about 1/8" play there.

I agree with leaving out the set screws. Even better is if you get a gear that doesn't have them. I had one gear split in half and it broke in the center of the set screw that was in the keyway.

Also, some let the front drive gear float as well to allow the chain to find it's own alignment.
